Donna,
For some reason this came up on the top of my feed, and it appears no one ever answered, so I will. Having spoken to many boards, here are the topics that interest board members the most.
- Fundraising for Nonprofit Board Members - most board members think fundraising is going golfing or just pestering people for money. They want and need to know what real fundraising is. This is also a good time to establish expectations for board member giving.
- Your Role as a Board Member - Most board members are too nervous to admit they have no idea what they are supposed to do. I once had two corporate CEOs tell me they joined the board because, "I get four catered lunches a year in a sweet location, and just have to vote yes on everything." Board members appreciate learning their roles and how they can make the best use of their time.
- The Basics of Fundraising - Explain the difference between events, annual, major and planned giving. Many of your board members probably have no idea what an IRA QCD or CGA is. Tell them so they can tell others.
- State of the Profession - Tell them what other nonprofits are doing and what we could be doing. I often find the statistics from Giving USA helpful here. But it is also nice to point out what other healthcare systems are doing.
Hope this helps.
