    AHP NEWS RELEASE:
Susan J. Doliner, FAHP, CFRE, Named This Year's Outstanding Leader in Fundraising by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 9, 2014 - Susan J. Doliner, FAHP, CFRE, vice president for development at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, has been selected by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) to receive the prestigious Si Seymour Award for excellence and outstanding leadership in fundraising. AHP is a professional organization that represents development officers at nonprofit hospitals, medical centers, health systems and related facilities throughout North America and abroad (www.ahp.org).

Formal presentation of the award will take place on Friday, October 24, during AHP's Annual International Conference in Palm Desert, Calif.

"With her proven record of successful, donor-centric fundraising and dedication to our profession, Susan Doliner is an outstanding choice to receive the 2014 AHP Si Seymour Award," says Steven W. Churchill, MNA, president and chief executive officer of AHP. "She has built a distinguished 24-year career with Maine Medical Center, while generously sharing her knowledge and experience with countless practitioners of the health care development profession."

A Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP), Ms. Doliner has played a pivotal role in the growth of Maine Medical Center (MMC), which is a founding member of the MaineHealth System. The 637-bed facility serves as a community hospital for greater Portland and as the primary tertiary care center for northern New England.

During her tenure as a development officer at MMC, Ms. Doliner has played key roles in the establishment of The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, the state-of-the-art Maine Medical Center Research Institute and a $40 million scholarship endowment to help Maine students attending the Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine afford a career in medicine. She has overseen numerous capital campaigns and combined private philanthropy commitments topping $165 million dollars. Prior to joining Maine Medical Center, Ms. Doliner led development efforts at Wheaton College and other organizations.

"Sue Doliner epitomizes a philanthropic calling that blends a complex strategy of listening, trust-building, vision-casting-and sometimes patient endurance-to achieve a vital impact on health care institutions and the people who rely on their services," says William S. Littlejohn, chair of the AHP Board of Directors and CEO/senior vice president of Sharp HealthCare Foundation in San Diego, Calif.

Ms. Doliner has served on and chaired the board of AHP and the AHP Foundation, and has been a board member of Bates College, the New England Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (NEAHP) and the Institute for Civic Leadership.

Her many AHP volunteer positions over the years have included vice chair for membership and communications, vice chair for regional affairs, secretary/treasurer and chair of the journal advisory council. She has served as a member on the AHP Board of Certification and as an AHP Fellows examiner. She also has taught fellow fundraisers as a faculty member for AHP's Annual International Conference, Development Primer and Madison Institute.

During a recent lecture at the AHP Madison Institute, an annual professional certificate program, Ms. Doliner shared these thoughts with her audience:

"Our work is honorable. It is a strategic and privileged link to better our communities. We don't just build new operating rooms and patient care towers, purchase new technology or fund new research to advance ideas and therapies-we take the very complex needs of our organizations and match these needs with the vision and foresight of generous donors. We give hope and make possible birthdays, graduations, walks on the beach, family reunions, recitals, touch football, new business ventures, weddings and new beginnings-we help save lives."

AHP's Si Seymour Award honors the memory of a trailblazer in the world of philanthropy whose career spanned a half-century of fundraising on behalf of many worthy causes, from the National War Fund during World War II and Harvard University, to youth groups, educational institutions, health organizations and numerous community service projects. Seymour's book, Designs for Fundraising, published in 1966 is regarded as a bible of philanthropic fundraising to this day.
